Karen E. Heller joined Mortenson and Pomeroy in 1996 and in 2012 co-founded Pomeroy, Heller & Ley. She is an accomplished brief writer and is responsible for preparing many of the firm’s written submissions in connection with appeals, trials, and substantive pre-trial motions in a variety of civil matters, including automobile and homeowners defense, insurance coverage matters, and medical malpractice cases. She also has significant expertise in insurance coverage. She has handled more than 75 appeals in the Supreme Court of New Jersey and the Appellate Division. Together with Dan Pomeroy, she has represented insurance companies in some of the most important insurance coverage cases in New Jersey, including Wadeer v. New Jersey Manufacturers Ins. Co., 220 N.J. 591 (2015); James v. New Jersey Manufacturers Ins. Co., 216 N.J. 552 (2014); Myska v. New Jersey Manufacturers Ins. Co., 440 N.J. Super. 458 (App. Div. 2015); Kieffer v. High Point Ins. Co., 422 N.J. Super. 38 (App. Div. 2011) (representing New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance Company); Seabridge v. Discount Auto, Inc., 393 N.J. Super. 327 (App. Div. 2007); Pinto v. New Jersey Manufacturers Ins. Co., 183 N.J. 405 (2005) (as amicus curiae on behalf of the New Jersey Defense Association); Dickson v. Selective Ins. Group, Inc., 363 N.J. Super. 344 (App. Div. 2003), certif. denied, 178 N.J. 453 (2004); and Vassiliu v. DaimlerChrysler Corp., 178 N.J. 286 (2004). She has achieved similar success on behalf of insurance carriers in numerous unpublished decisions, and was responsible for the appellate brief on behalf of counsel for plaintiffs in In re Estate of F.W., 398 N.J. Super. 344 (2008).

Ms. Heller is a graduate of the State University of New York at Albany and received her law degree in 1986 from Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. During law school, Ms. Heller gained valuable appellate experience as a law clerk for the in-house legal office of a major insurance company that was responsible for all appeals in the Supreme Court of New York, Appellate Division, Second Department, as well as Court of Appeals matters. Following graduation, she spent several years at a mid-size Manhattan litigation law firm, where she concentrated on insurance coverage matters and appellate practice. She is admitted to practice in New Jersey, New York, the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, and the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York.
